Rhys Hastings is often celebrated for his individualistic approach to the drums, which is fluid, dynamic, and highly musical. Along with his unwavering devotion to the pocket, his talents have earned him work on stage and in studio all around the world.
Born and raised in Ohio, Rhys was an avid learner of all things drums and jazz and at eighteen moved to New York City in pursuit of a Jazz Performance degree at The City College of New York. There he had the privilege of studying under heavyweight players John Patitucci, Tony Moreno, Scott Reeves, Mike Holober, and Ray Gallon. Since 2010 he has been living and playing in Los Angeles.
Rhys has toured, recorded, and collaborated extensively in the U.S. and abroad with many diverse projects, including Yves Tumor, Tobias Jesso Jr, Mild High Club, Gothic Tropic, James Supercave, Cornelia Murr, and The Elected. He's had the pleasure of supporting on stage the likes of Morrissey, Future Islands, Gang of Four, and Third Eye Blind, as well as playing Late Night with Seth Meyers, and music festivals Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Primavera Sound, Best Kept Secret, Life is Beautiful, The Great Escape, among others.
Additionally, Rhys has developed a holistic and immersive style of teaching called the Hastings Method through his work as a private drum instructor. When he's not on the road or doing session work, he teaches students of all ages and levels of experience in Los Angeles and online utilizing this Method.
